HISTORY

Muschett High School is dedicated to the holistic development of its students. The school holds firm to its motto; “Truth and Knowledge in All Things”, as well as the vision of the Anglican church of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, and the mission of the Ministry of Education, to provide quality education for all.

The school is situated in the northwest sugar belt plains of the parish of Trelawny in the district of Wakefield.  Its Property covers approximately ten (10) hectares of land.

This land was once part of the Hampden Sugar estates, which was donated in the 1960s to the Anglican Diocese of Jamaica by the Muschett family for the construction of an Agricultural School to serve the people of Trelawny whose main livelihood was agriculture.

Hence the Ministry of Education and the Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands jointly own the school. The Government of Jamaica built the school in 1969 as a six-stream Junior Secondary School to accommodate eight hundred and ten (810) students from grades 7 to 9.

At its opening there were 283 boys, 282 girls, 19 teachers, 1 principal, 1 vice-principal and a support staff of 10.  As at September 2014, the enrolment stood at 1604 students.  Currently there are 66 teachers, 3 Guidance Counselors, 1 Principal, 2 Vice-Principals and a support staff of 27. The institution has undergone several name changes; New Secondary school in 1974, Comprehensive High School in 1991, and subsequently, High School in 1998.

Over these 45 years, the school has played a pivotal role in producing several influential individuals and skilled workers who have made significant contributions to the communities in Trelawny and across Jamaica.

The school has been blessed with the service of six (6) Principals – Mr. E. Whittingham, Mr. S. Robinson, Mr. V. Gunter, Mr. D. McIntyre, Mr. G. Anderson, and presently Mr. L. Johnson.  Mrs. L. Whylie, Mr. A Thompson and Mrs. M. Gray also acted as Principal on occasions.
